Before you can vote, you must register. You can register to vote by mail, in person at your county, city or township clerk's office, or at any of the many Secretary of State branch offices located throughout the state. You may also register at the time you renew your driver license by mail with the voter registration application which is included with driver license renewal information. Additionally, some agencies which provide services through the Family Independence Agency, the Department of Community Health and the Michigan Jobs Commission are authorized to offer voter registration services to their clients. Finally, you may register to vote at military recruitment centers.

It is required that you register at least thirty days before an election. This time limit is in place to provide the clerk adequate time to process your application and send you a voter identification card.

If you have moved to a new city or township, you are required to register again in your new locality. If you move within your current city or township, be sure to remember to update your address. This can be done by mail, in person at your local clerk's office or a Secretary of State branch office, or even at your polling place on election day.

To obtain a mail-in voter registration form, contact your local clerk's office. You may also download the form on the Michigan Republican Party website at www.MiGOP.org. When you register by mail, you are required to vote in person at your precinct the first time you vote unless you are: (1) disabled as defined by state law; (2) sixty years of age or older; or (3) temporarily residing overseas. Persons who are temporarily outside the United States may register by means of a Federal Postcard Application form, which is available at U.S. military bases and embassies. Any Michigan resident who registers out of state must re-establish residency before he or she will be allowed to re-register in Michigan.
