Lincoln Day Dinner Success!  Governor Romney’s Address Covered by C-SPAN.

On February 5th, Oakland County Republicans gathered for the 117th Annual Lincoln Day Dinner.  Over 750 Republicans gathered at the Shenandoah Country Club for an outstanding evening of wit, wisdom and politics.

Our master of ceremonies was Oakland County Executive L. Brooks Patterson, who kept things light and kept them moving.  No one escaped Brooks’ timely humor.  Congressman Joe Knollenberg addressed us about the Republican agenda in the House of Representatives and introduced our featured speaker.

Governor Mitt Romney gave an excellent speech about his accomplishments in Massachusetts (describing himself as a “red dot in a blue ocean” of Massachusetts).  He also laid out a plan to meet the challenges of the United States not only at home, but abroad.  Governor Romney was especially focused on making America as competitive as possible and improving the education of our young people.  The entire evening was a real “welcome home” for Governor Romney and his wife, Ann, both of whom grew up in Michigan and first met not too far away from our dinner facility site.

We also heard from our Gubernatorial candidate, Dick DeVos, who made the case for “change in Michigan” in the upcoming election.  Our Senate candidates, Sheriff Michael Bouchard, Keith Butler, and Jerry Zandstra, were also able to address the crowd and convincingly gave their reasons why Michigan needs to replace Debbie Stabenow.

The entire evening was a huge success.  Congratulations go to President Wanda Warsinski and the entire Lincoln Day Dinner Committee, who did a fabulous job.  We are also very grateful to Martin Manna of Shenandoah Country Club and Chaldean Cultural Center for the fine work of his staff.

It was a super way to begin Super Bowl weekend.  I am sure it was an evening that none of us will forget for a long time.

Confirming Judge Alito.

I am sure that many of you, like I, were touched when President George Bush greeted Supreme Court Samuel Alito at the recent State of the Union Address.  We are certainly pleased that in 2006, another Supreme Court Justices has been added who will follow “the rule of law” and not legislate from the bench.  Thank you President Bush for the courage to nominate a man of the character and background of Justice Alito.  Thank you to Senator Bill Frist (last year’s Oakland County Lincoln Day Dinner speaker) and the Senate Republicans for the confirmation of Justice Alito!  Long may he serve!
