Confirm Judge Roberts!
The Senate confirmation hearing for Judge John Roberts has begun. As soon as the first bell sounded, the Democrat “attack and discredit” strategy began to unfold. Led by Senators Schumer and Kennedy, the Democrat members of the Senate Judiciary Committee have begun their pandering to their Party’s extreme left wing.
Fortunately, this effort is being led by the same Democrat “brain trust,” now aided and abetted by Chairman Dean, who have failed to recapture the White House, failed to win a majority in the House and Senate and have failed to provide any plan to move America forward. But, rather than dwell on these irritating negatives, let’s accentuate the positive!
First, President George Bush has made an outstanding choice in Judge John Roberts to be the next Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. The President has demonstrated outstanding judgment in nominating Judge Roberts. He is clearly a Judge who believes in interpreting the Constitution, not in dictating by judicial fiat.
Second, Judge John Roberts has unparalleled qualifications to be on the United States Supreme Court. He has worked as a lawyer in both the White House and the Office of Solicitor General, the group that argues cases for the government before the Supreme Court. He has also represented individuals and businesses before the Supreme Court. He has argued cases in the Supreme Court an astounding 39 times! Most lawyers dream of reaching the halls of the Supreme Court once in a lifetime. Judge Roberts is enrolled in the “frequent flyer” program. By all fair accounts, he has been an outstanding lawyer and federal judge.
Finally, Judge Roberts deserves a fair hearing and an “up or down” vote in the U.S. Senate as soon as possible. The Supreme Court’s new term begins in October and that Court must have its leader.
I urge you to write our Michigan Senators in support of Judge John Roberts as the next Chief Justice of the United States Supreme Court. If these Senators do not hear from us, they will mistakenly think that Judge Roberts does not have support in Michigan. From my conversations with Republicans, Democrats and independents in Oakland County, it is clear that Judge Roberts is considered to be a good man, strong nominee and deserves confirmation by the United States Senate.
