Letters to Editors

Jennifer Granholm (January 24, 2001)

After a year of public disclosures, a state investigation and newspaper reports that have uncovered no-bid contracts at Wayne County's metro Airport and raised serious questions regarding cronyism and corruption, Attorney General Jennifer Granholm flip-flopped yesterday and finally agreed to investigate the troubled airport.

"Where has Jennifer Granholm been this past year?" asked Michigan Republican Party Chairman Rusty Hills. "Granholm flip-flopped, and agreed to investigate, only when the press coverage of her failure to examine the airport started to hurt her gubernatorial campaign."

One day after her flip-flop -- and on the heels of newspaper stories that Granholm's husband received five no-bid contracts from Wayne County, where Granholm previously worked -- Granholm proposed a new "ethics" policy for state officials and lawmakers.

"This is nothing but a sham," said Hills.

"Rule #1 of ethics: Investigate problems, like Metro Airport, when they start. That's the job of the Attorney General. Granholm flunked that test," Hills observed

"Rule #2: Your spouse shouldn't be awarded no-bid contracts and receive taxpayers' dollars from your political benefactors and donors. This flunks the smell test," Hills said.

"All of Granholm's reactions are politically motivated," added Hills. "When it comes to investigating the corruption and cronyism plaguing Wayne County and Metro Airport, Ms. Granholm is a Jenny-come-lately. It's time she stopped talking about ethics and started practicing some," Hills concluded.

Here are some sample letters to the editor. Please take a moment and write a letter to your local paper(s). We cannot let Granholm get away with this farce.

Example Letter #1

It is amazing how quickly Attorney General Jennifer Granholm can leap into action once the press points out her sloughing off. Only when her reputation began to suffer did she finally agree to investigate the ongoing problems surrounding the Wayne County Metro Airport.

Perhaps her lack of initiative in the past can be attributed to the discovery of five no-bid contracts from Wayne County awarded to Granholm's husband. Ironically, now that Granholm has been caught in her web of foot-dragging and corruption she dares to propose a new "ethics" policy for state officials and lawmakers. It's time she stopped talking about ethics and started practicing some.

Example Letter #2

Ethics advice from Granholm? What's next, stock tips from Enron executives?

Granholm has some nerve strutting out in front of the cameras to propose an "ethics" code for elected officials. She may talk about being a new kind of politician, but the facts point out that she is clearly part of the good ole' boys network in Wayne County.

I cringe to think of what kind of cronyism she would bring to the governor's office from her roots down in Wayne County. Just look at the way she conducted oversight of Metro airport: No-bid contracts for friends and donors as far as the eye can see. Anyone that has been to Metro lately and compared it to other airports around the country can attest to the fact that Metro is the pits.

Granholm is no expert on ethics. But she's clearly an expert when it comes to playing political games.

Example Letter #3

I am having trouble making sense of the actions of Attorney General Jennifer Granholm regarding the Wayne County Metro Airport. First, she ignores the ongoing problems that have plagued the airport, refusing to investigate the situation. Then, when the press grabbed hold of her failure to examine the airport and her campaign began to suffer the consequences, she flip-flopped and agreed to look into the situation.

Not only has Granholm neglected her duty as Attorney General by disregarding an important investigation, she has contributed to the corruption personally. And we are supposed to believe her new "ethics" policy for state officials and lawmakers?

Example Letter #4

I heard our Attorney General on WJR recently, and I am outraged. She is trying to dupe all of us into believing that she is truly concerned about weeding out corruption and cronyism at Metro Airport. Metro has been a mess for years, yet Granholm dragged her heels and refused to investigate. Now, after seeing it blow up in her face while she is running for governor, she's changed her mind and decided to launch an investigation. Please. Does anyone truly think that this "investigation" will be objective, given that she never wanted it to happen in the first place?

Example Letter #5

Attorney General Jennifer Granholm has really backed herself into a corner this time. Her indecisive attitude regarding the decision to investigate problems linked to the Wayne County Metro Airport has proven once again that she is not prepared to be governor.

Granholm remained idle in the pursuit of an investigation into the troubled airport until press coverage of her inactivity started to hurt her gubernatorial campaign. Only then, and in the aftermath of various reports that Granholm's husband received five no-bid contracts from Wayne County did she agree to investigate the airport.

Clearly, Granholm is looking out for her own best interests and not those of the citizens of this state. The job of the Attorney General to track down corruption and terminate it, not to further its spread by participating personally.

Example Letter #6

Jennifer Granholm should change her last name from Granholm to Grand-stand. I couldn't believe my eyes when I read about her new "ethics" code which she has proposed for elected officials. Isn't this like asking the fox to guard the hen house?

Granholm is a product of the corrupt money machine in Wayne county. Her donors and supporters have all gotten rich off government contracts, and now they are paying her back by contributing to her campaign. Granholm's own pocketbook has benefited from no-bid contracts, with her husband obtaining 5 no-bid contracts from the county.

If Granholm thinks she can snow over the public with a flashy press conference and some hype, she is sorely mistaken. We will remember where Granholm's "ethics" originated.

Example Letter #7

Does Attorney General Jennifer Granholm think we are all stupid? Her announcement that she is conducting an "investigation" of Metro Airport is nothing but a political ploy. Anybody who has paid attention during the past year remembers that she has consistently claimed that no investigation is necessary.

Now that Granholm's donors and contributors are under scrutiny, we see why she has resisted an investigation. Metro has been a center for corruption and cronyism for years, with the good-ole-boys network lining the pockets of Granholm's buddies. These same buddies have been returning the favor by stuffing Granholm's campaign pockets.

While an investigation is clearly needed, I highly doubt that an investigation by Granholm will be objective. She clearly needs to protect the folks keeping her campaign coffers jammed with cash, and I highly doubt she will go out of her way to crack down on the corruption and Metro that got many of them rich in the first place.

Example Letter #8

If I were given the opportunity to ask Attorney General Jennifer Granholm one question I would ask, "How do you expect the good citizens of this state to accept your proposed new "ethics" policy for state and lawmakers when you yourself are caught up in a web of corruption?"

Just recently Granholm announced that she has changed her decision and will now investigate the problems that engulf the Wayne County Metro Airport. Why the sudden flip-flop? Perhaps her change of heart can be attributed to the bad press she has received as a result of her failure to examine the situation. Another possibility could be the recent discovery of five no-bid contracts from Wayne County given to Granholm's husband, where Granholm previously worked.

Whatever the reason for Granholm's decision to finally investigate the escalading problems of the airport, her intentions were politically motivated and insincere. Perhaps Granholm is not the best person to speak of ethics.
